Yes, as Greg said maintenance mode is really handy and can be coupled to other plugins such as automatic upgrade, which then puts the blog maintenance time to update Word Press, you can specify a time maintenance on site, several languages and if you forget, it displays a warning message indicating that the blog is still in maintenance mode
